Lambeth Parents Demonstrate at
Redfearn ClosureOver 40 members of the public blocked the entrance
to Lambeth Town Hall on the night of the last council meeting, in our protest
attacking Lambeth’s treatment of Special Needs Children.
Stung by Labour’s recent closure of the much-loved
Redfearn Centre for 16-19 year olds, local parents have been left further aghast
at being charged for their children to play in the specially-adapted Charlie
Chaplin playground. Yes, you read that correctly; in Lambeth’s new red borough,
special needs children have to pay a charge to play in their own playground!
A petition signed by over 1000 people was
handed to the council by Conservative Cllr Suzanne Poole, who noted the guilty
look on the faces of Labour’s backbenchers at what their leaders had done.
Said special needs governor and local
Conservative activist Michael Poole-Wilson, “Lambeth told us they couldn’t
afford to keep the Redfearn open, yet its total cost is less than the pay rise
Labour’s councillors have just awarded themselves!”
Said Vauxhall Conservatives Chairman, Stuart
Barr, “Can someone please tell the voters of Lambeth how Cllr Steve Reed
(Labour’s Leader of the Council) can award himself a 52% pay rise, and his
cabinet 79%, when the first thing he does is to allow cuts in services to the
most vulnerable in society?” |
