Vauxhall Conservative Cyclists
Campaign against Oval Blackspot
Your local Conservatives have been campaigning to
have one of Vauxhall’s most hair-raising stretch of roads for cyclists
redesigned: the 200m stretch of Kennington Park Road north of Oval tube station,
where the A3 and A23 merge. The road’s arterial nature means it has a very high
number of cyclists, yet it suffers from a design which gives little
consideration for cyclists.
Local cyclist
and Conservative Activist Richard Hyslop said, “the southbound journey is the
cyclists’ worst nightmare come true – when entering from the Kennington Rd (A23)
and intending carrying on southwards onto the Clapham Road (A3). The manoeuvre
requires a choice: either cycle in the buslane, and then cut-across the busy A23
lane at the last second to carry on southwards onto the A3; or cycle in the
middle of the road for 200m to be in position ready for the junction to avoid
cutting across the A23 lane. Either way, cyclists are forced to either cut
across, or block the progress of motor traffic which mostly exceeds the 30mph
limit.
Vauxhall Conservative chairman Stuart Barr
said, “We have pressured TFL to have an urgent review of the road design there;
if it is serious about its new cycle-friendly policies, it must act urgently
before a cycling death happens.” |
