Labour Fails The Clean Streets
Test
It's official - Lambeth is getting dirtier
under Labour. After just 6 months in control at the Town Hall, Lambeth has
plummeted from being London's third cleanest borough to 13th place in the latest
league tables.
According to an independent survey undertaken
before May's local elections, under Conservative leadership of the borough’s
environment Lambeth achieved it's best ever rating for street cleaning; and
Conservative councillors threw down the gauntlet to the new Labour Council to
build on the progress made over the past four years.
In April, ENCAMS found a "continuing pattern of
improvement" that "easily outperforms" other similar boroughs. In the past year
alone noticeable improvements had been achieved in tackling graffiti and
fly-posting, sweeping roads and pavements and keeping busy transport hubs clean.
In many areas Lambeth performed well above the national and London averages.
"In June we challenged Labour Lambeth to keep
clean streets at the top of the council's agenda, but they've clearly decided
not to bother," says Conservative Environment spokesperson Cllr Clare Whelan.
"In 2002 we inherited a borough from Labour
widely regarded as one of the dirtiest in London but after four years, millions
of pounds in extra investment and a lot of hard work both the perception and
reality had changed. Unfortunately, under Labour that progress has been reversed
in less than 6 months." |
