Shirley Talks Green Cars
with Green Shadow Minister
Shirley Houghton, the Conservative GLA
candidate for Lambeth and Southwark (pictured left) met the Shadow Secretary of State for the
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) (right) yesterday (Monday 11th June 2007)
and discussed environmentally-friendly means of transport.
At the “Motor-expo” event, held at Canary
Wharf, Shirley met with Peter Ainsworth MP, as they toured the alternative
versions of cars that are available on the market – battery-powered, hybrid,
hydrogen and bio-fuelled cars.
Shirley Houghton said, “The environmental
challenges that we face do not mean banning and legislating are our only
options. We can all take positive steps as individuals such as driving one of
these vehicles.”
Shirley added, “This is an exciting time.
As manufacturers are offering us ever advancing technology, and their capability
increases, the price of these vehicles is continuing to drop making them a
viable alternative for many more people.”
Shirley also saw some battery-powered
vehicles at the Dulwich Green Fair last month.
Shirley also said, “Local authorities also
have a part to play in enabling greater use of green vehicles. Street parking
bays and charging points for electric vehicles provide the infrastructure people
need to use them freely and so make their contribution to curbing our
emissions.” |
